Application Guidelines

The Amazonia BR/UK Workshop grants are designed to provide financial support to bring together a UK/Brazil bilateral cohort of early career researchers to take part in workshops. This is supported by the UK and Brazil Governments as part of the International Science Partnerships Fund.

This workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research experiences and expertise, while providing opportunities for sustainable partnerships between participants. During the workshops early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of a poster/short oral presentation and discuss with established Brazilian and UK researchers.

Through the International Science Partnerships Fund, the British Council will cover the costs related to participation in the workshop, including travel (both international and local), accommodation, and meals. Please note that participants will be accommodated in shared rooms. Please note that participants will be responsible for making all the necessary arrangements regarding travel and health insurance. The British Council accepts no responsibility for any problems which may occur with travel or accommodation arrangements or any other issues participants might experience when the participants are away from their homes.

Eligibility and Suitability Criteria

  • Participants must be Early Career Researchers working in Brazil or a UK research institution.

  • Early Career Researchers are defined as holding a Ph.D. (or having equivalent research experience – this will be defined according to the field of research/discipline) or

  • Have completed a Ph.D. or an equivalent higher research degree no longer than 10 years ago or

  • If you have not started a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, you should have at least 5 years' equivalent research experience (for example, in the medical and veterinary sciences, public health, or social sciences).

  • Please note that Early Career Researchers are equivalent to the ‘Recognised Researcher’ and sometimes ‘Experienced Researcher’ categories in the EU framework for researchers’ careers.

  • Participants must have a research or academic position (a permanent post, research contract, or fellowship) at a recognized research institution either in Brazil or the UK.

  • Please note that participants are expected to attend all sessions of the workshop

Travel Advice

Given the warm temperatures and high humidity in the Manaus, we suggest participants to wear lightweight and breathable attire for comfort during the event. Additionally, to protect against sun exposure and insect bites, we recommend wearing sunblock and applying insect repellent. There is a low risk of malaria in the Amazon basin of Brazil, including in the city of Manaus: awareness of risk and bite avoidance are recommended.

For those travelling from the UK, we strongly suggest applicants to visit the Foreign Travel Advice website for further information regarding travelling to Manaus. Please be advised that yellow fever vaccination is recommended. We advise participants to staying informed and prepared based on personal health considerations.
